Kri Island (Sorido Bay Resort)

Sorido Bay Resort lies on the edge of the mountainous Kri island in northern Raja Ampat. It is approximately 75 kilometres northwest of Sorong, the main port of entry into this fabulous and fascinating region and lies between two of Raja Ampat’s main islands; Batanta and Waigeo. This location gives it one of the most stunning and rewarding house reefs in the world, where Dr G Allen recorded 374 species of fish on a single dive! The resort is in the Dampier Strait, which is quite possibly the fishiest part of the fishest part of the world!

The resort comprises 7 villas built in 2004 with the maximum capacity of the resort 14 guests. Each villa is situated in the jungle overlooking a deep lagoon. There are two types of villa; Sentani at 65 square metres each and Kaimana at 90 square metres each. Each villa is air conditioned with en-suite bathroom facilities, satellite television, mini-bar, camera work station, private porch and laundry service.

At the main building, tea, coffee, drinking water and snacks are available all day. Free wifi is available in the lounge area. Many people enjoy relaxing here of an evening and enjoying the delightful views. The sundeck and outdoor lounge is probably the best place for the apres-dive beer! Meals are served buffet style and have a heavy Asian influence.

The resort buildings have been constructed with local natural materials using traditional design and methods combined with a contemporary design flair. As few trees and bushes as possible were removed during construction so often it feels like you are hidden away within the trees and orchids!

Sorido Bay Resort offers 7, 14 and 21 night packages that run from Sunday to Sunday. 10 nights trips are also available from Sundays to Wednesdays.

Papua Diving pride themselves on their knowledge of the local reefs with over 20 years of experience exploring and charting the waters around Kri Island. Their most experienced dive leader has logged well over 15 000 dives! Their location in the Dampier Strait must be one of the prime locations in the Raja Ampat archipelago.

There are 7 shaded fibreglass dive boats that depart daily except for Saturdays when only diving off the jetty is available. Boat diving ends at 1800 on Fridays and commences again at 1800 on Saturday. A 1900 night dive is offered on a Saturday. Dive sites are mostly within 5 and 15 minutes boat ride of the resort. Up to 4 guided boat dives are offered daily and usually divers return to the resort between dives. Papua Diving has a rule that only 6 divers can be on a boat at once and at least 2 dive guides will escort these groups. All boats carry oxygen, first aid kits and radios.

Occasionally full or half day trips to remote islands can be arranged. A limited selection of gear is available for rent so if you require it make sure to request it in good time. Nitrox is available free of charge.

Non-diving activities are also available such as kayaking, visits to other islands for exploring, walking and bird watching.

On the same site is the Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Centre (RARRC). Since 1993 RARRC has been working with local people to establish conservation efforts and education in the area. Several current staff members used to partake in shark-finning, blast fishing and logging but now work at or with the resort as a result of its education programmes. It is anticipated an expansion of the RARRC will result in a suite of offices, laboratories and storage rooms for scientists to utilise when studying the area.
