Nestled on its own tiny beach on an island called Kapa, the Reef Resort is only a short boat ride from the main town of Vava'u, Neiafu (Image by the Reef Resort)

Reef Resort is located on a small island called Kapa in the remote South Pacific Vava'u atoll in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Their desirable island location is far enough away from Neiafu, Vava'u's main town to feel like an island hideaway, yet it is conveniently close to town and the airport for shopping and transfers. The crystal clear waters provide brilliant snorkelling and one of the best snorkelling spots in Vava'u, the Japanese Gardens, is just off the beach. Whales may also be seen from the resort in the season.

The resort is perfectly located for joining whale watching, fishing, diving and other excursions. The operators in Neiafu are happy to pick you up from the jetty as it is just a small detour for them when going out from the main port.

Sip a coffee at the resort deck while waiting for the pick-up – a perfect way to start your day.

Vava'u enjoys a tropical climate with average daily temperatures of 29ºC in January and 24ºC in June. The weather is warm and generally sunny throughout the year. November to April, the weather is more humid and thunderstorms are more frequent, but the water is warmer for swimming, there is still excellent visibility for diving, and quieter winds for sailing.

From May to September, southeast trade winds range from 15-25 knots. During the summer months, northeast winds of 10-20 knots are the norm.

The Reef Resort is owned by a convivial and welcoming couple from Switzerland, Josef and Renate, who, after highly successful careers in fine dining restaurants at Hilton hotels, both decided to take off and go sailing around the world on their yacht.

Their extensive cruising took them to Tonga where they quickly fell in love with the place.  Before they took over the Reef Resort, they had settled on Fafa Island Resort for 15 years.

Reef Resort is a wonderful boutique resort located on a tranquil island in beautiful Vava'u.

The resort has only four stunning luxury bungalows (fales).

Finished to a high standard with tasteful furnishings and a modern feel, the resort has been designed to blend in with the local environment and minimize the impact on this little known pearl of the Pacific.

Each bungalow is fitted with fans, private decks, walk-in showers, tea/coffee making facilities and refrigerator.

In addition, each fale has a music system for connection to an iPod or MP3 player and WiFi internet access.

The fantastic food and hospitality experienced at Reef Resort is not a coincidence. Josef and Renate’s culinary background is from Switzerland and Germany. After working as professional chefs for many years with leading Hilton hotels around the world, they opened their own restaurant in Switzerland with  Gault Millau (one of the most influential French restaurant guides) rating. They then decided to sail around the world before finally settling in Tonga.

The Reef Resort serves breakfast, lunch, freshly baked cake for afternoon tea and a three course dinner daily. The Reef Resort has no set menu. We discuss what sort of meals our guests prefer and source the produce from the local market.

The deep pacific ocean surrounding Vavau provides an abundance of seafood. The freshest Tuna, Wahoo, Coral Trout, Snapper and Lobster all feature in the dining experience at the Reef Resort.

Organic locally grown produce is the main source of seasonal vegetables and fruit.

Organic meat and chicken is flown in direct from NZ and compliments the local Vavau produce perfectly.

It is this unique set of fresh produce combined with Josef's and Renate's professional background and philosophy that makes the culinary experience at Reef Resort so special.

Reef Resort’s restaurant and bar is beautifully appointed featuring exposed wooden beams and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that can be folded away to create a fantastic indoor/outdoor space with beautiful views.

The restaurant has a large deck allowing you to enjoy breakfast alfresco or dine under the stars.

The bar offers a good selection of wines and spirits for either at dinner or a sundowner cocktail.
